Ornate gesso, gilt and glass framed memento mori remembrance for William L. Oxenford who died April 1890. Age nine month, a sad 19th century commentary on the day’s longevity. Nautical motif with anchors and winged dove of peace with out day date hint at a drowning or watery grave. Possibly a shipwreck, common at the time.
When I opened the back of this incredible frame I found secreted away, a second death notice in black. Samuel Hartman died December 23 1897 aged 60 years. A mystery for sure, as the mourned loved ones name plate notice was designed to slide into a slot for same.
A memorial poem inscribed reads;
Thy gentle voice now is hushed. Thy warm true hart is still. And on thy you and innocent brow, Is resting death's cold chill
Thy hands are clasped upon thy breast, We have kissed thy lovely brow. And in our aching hearts we know, We have no darling now.
