Galveston Hurricane Of 1900 Memorial Bracelet Memorial bracelet from the Galveston Texas Hurricane and flood of 1900. Acorn like wooden beads well aged and tipped with green celluloid floret stems. Oak leaves finely carved and a wooden charm bead talisman with gold filled finding engraved September 8 1900 Galveston flood. In pretty good condition to survive this long, with a few nibbles on an acorn or two, leather woven band has a small bit of wear. An amazing historic relic and timely memento of Natures timeless fury. Perfect for that Weatherman, Meteorologist or FEMA director on your gift list.

The dawn of the 20th century ushered in many dramatic changes in the United States. The Wright Brothers conducted flight experiments at Kittyhawk, North Carolina. The U.S. population was 76 million in 1900 compared to 270 million in the year 2000. And, the U.S. government took in $567 million in 1900. At the end of the 20th century it took in $1.7 trillion.

There were many memorable events in the United States throughout the 20th century. The Galveston, Texas, hurricane of 1900 remains the worst disaster in American history. More than 8,000 people perished September 8, 1900 when the category 4 hurricane barreled into Galveston, where many people were on vacation.

In 1900 there were no weather satellites and no Doppler radar. However, warnings were issue by the U.S. Weather Bureau, the predecessor of NOAA's National Weather Service. People were advised to seek higher ground. Many didn't heed the warnings preferring instead to watch the huge waves.

On September 8, the hurricane slammed into Galveston almost head on. Waves were higher than 15 feet and winds howled at 130 miles per hour. By the time the storm passed, more than 8,000 people were dead, countless were injured and half of the island's homes had been swept away.

Memento Mori Hair Work Compact Mourning cloak Butterfly rests atop an agregation of flaxen blond hair, encased in old nickle silver make up compact. Unusual for human hair to found in places other then brooches, rings and other jewelry, yet this old piece is special. Heavy flat silver colored mesh chain also in fine condition secures this rare piece. Glass has been replaced with clear plastic or similar material. Powder puff and well are cleaverly hidden in base. So well I did not discover prior to this post. Classy yet so very different. Very early 20th century style.

Victorian braided human hair mourning brooch. This three link chain pin, is a memento mori remembrance for a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows IOOF. A death souvenir of low carat gold wash or pinchbeck, it would have been worn by ladies auxiliary of this fraternal organization called Rebekah. Odd Fellow fraternity motto F.L.T. stands for Friendship, Love Truth.
