One Eyed Jane Daguerreotype CDV Set Daguerreotype dag plus a later CDV Miss Jane Smith Worcester Massachusetts. Pre Civil War medical anomaly photography set. Sixth Plate Daguerreotype, circa 1855. Miss Jane Smith is a proud and attractive young Lady who looks directly at the Camera, even though she has only one eye!
Half case with unusual musical instrument, a lyre atop books with floral motif. The hand colored Dag shows nice skin tones and a delicate pink blush to her cheeks and lips and gold has been added to the two rings on her right hand! In addition to this RARE Daguerreotype is a later period C.D.V. or carte de visite of Miss Smith. On the reverse side of the photo is written her name above the Photographers back stamp, S. B. Winchester of Worcester Mass.
When you consider the extreme reserve exhibited by most women from the Victorian era these two photographs are all the more amazing! You will notice that Miss Smith is wearing eye glasses in both images, something many present day individuals remove before having their photo taken! She has chosen NOT to hide her affliction by having the photographer take her image in profile! She has also chosen NOT to hide her affliction behind Dark Glasses! And lastly, she has chosen NOT to have a Glass Eye!! No, she is a PROUD, HONEST and BEAUTIFUL Woman, an admirable combination!!
