Born in March 7 1802 and studying with Hayden, he attended the Royal Academy in London.

As an early teen he was given a dead Lion from a Bestiary as zoos were called in Victorian times and learned anatomy from hours of dissection and sketching. Trafalgar was his last major work. 1866. His faithful dogs were a favorite theme. Many rescuing drowning victims, children, he identified with. The Landseer Newfoundland became the name associated with his drawings of lifesaving.

Years of stress alcohol, depression and drug abuse fueled his mental frailty. He was declared insane in 1872. He died in 1873, buried in St. Paul's Cathedral.
